Peter’s first priority in working with singers is to assist them to get in touch with their true voice. The true voice, as it is experienced by the singer and heard by an audience, only comes through when all parts of the singer are working together as an integrated whole; body, mind, and soul (core self). The truest, most sublime singing is soulful expression translated into song. And being a truthful, successful performer or singing actor requires this same connected wholeness.
After years of working with both male and female singers, Peter has come to the conclusion that it's best for singers to train with a teacher of the same gender because of the mechanics and subtleties of understanding and explaining our vocal mechanisms and ranges. For transgender singers, Peter recommends working with a teacher of whatever gender feels most comfortable to the student.
In voice training sessions, we work with breathing, posture, and how the physical components of the body are held and honored by the singer in the process of singing. We work with the alignment and shaping of vocal resonance and proper vocal placement, including the ability to develop and access the “mix voice," an all-important part of singing in the world of today’s contemporary music.
We work on developing the singer’s sense of musicianship and musicality, as appropriate for the style of music that is being sung. We also work on how to develop effective practicing habits, the basics of reading music, building an audition and performance repertoire, the subtle keys to making well-informed choices for song acting and performance, and how to prepare for auditions and performances.
We also pay attention to the singer's inner landscape of thoughts, impressions, perspectives, and emotions, working with the singer's desire to sing and how that informs their vocal expression, stage presence, and musical style.
For voice training, Peter works with beginning and intermediate level male singers, ages 8–adult, who are interested in singing musical theater, standards, pop, and light rock.
Peter accepts new students by audition only in a 20-minute complimentary consultation/interview session via Zoom. For the audition, please prepare a short song of your choice (provide your own accompaniment or sing a cappella). Alternatively, you may send a video or YouTube link of yourself singing a song (however, even if you send in a video, a consultation/interview is still required). The consultation/interview is also an opportunity for Peter to get to know you, and for you to get to know Peter, for you to ask questions, etc.
Voice training sessions are 45 minutes. For students ages 8–12, 30-minute sessions are available (pricing upon request).
Sessions are available via Zoom or may be available in-person at Peter's studio in San Mateo, California.

In these sessions, we address the entire process of preparing for an audition or performance, including:
• song choice
• song acting
• audition and performance skills
• preparing the song vocally
An exceptional solo song performance moves both the audience and the singer, and appears as though it is being spontaneously and effortlessly created at the very moment it is happening. However, creating this kind of performance requires dedication, time, exploration, careful planning, and practice. It requires much more than just learning notes and lyrics, producing them pleasantly with the voice, and then taking the stage to sing. Whether in an audition or a performance, while singing ability, vocal quality, and vocal health are important parts of the picture, in today's musical theater, as well as in most other genres of singing, the performance (acting) of the song is as important as, and sometimes more important than, the singing.
If you're serious about being a great singer, training your voice is important, but it's only part of the picture. Whether you're preparing for a specific audition or performance, or just doing the important work of improving your song acting and performance skills, this is the work that will make the difference.
We can also work on building your audition and performance repertoire and creating an effective resume.
For audition and performance coaching, Peter works with all genders, ages, and skill levels.
